Geothermal by nature. Wellness & low-impact by design

At Hugarró, sustainability shapes every aspect of how we build, heat, operate, and protect the remarkable landscape in which we operate.
Our wellness experience is rooted in clean geothermal energy, regenerative design principles, and a commitment to minimizing environmental impact at every stage of development.

Powered 100% by clean geothermal energy & hydropower
Instead of relying on fossil fuels, Hugarró taps into Iceland’s most abundant natural resource: geothermal heat. No combustion, no flue gases, no air pollution, and ultra-low lifecycle emissions.
A single geothermal loop supplies warmth for our pools, spa facilities, cabins, and future hotel.

Meaningful carbon savings
By replacing conventional heating systems, Hugarró prevents approximately 500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year. Equivalent to removing 110 cars from the road annually. Our pool heating system using heat exchangers saves 40% in energy consumption. This keeps Hugarró’s operational carbon footprint near-zero.

Regenerative Water Stewardship
Our geothermal water is used responsibly through closed-loop heat transfer. Cooled geothermal fluid is safely reinjected back into the earth. Reinjection maintains reservoir sustainability and preserves long-term resource health.

Designed to Protect the Land
A compact geothermal well pad will preserve the surrounding landscape. Pipelines are buried to maintain natural views and future facilities connect to the same geothermal loop—ensuring no additional impact. The few tries that will have to be cut to will be replaced 10-fold.

Sustainable Building Methods
Hugarró will be constructed using modern, low-impact building technologies that reduce long-term energy demand.
Our buildings will have minimal energy need thanks to exceptional insulation throughout all structures, high-efficiency windows, airtight building envelopes and ventilation with heat recovery to minimize heat loss.

Water Efficiency
Toilets flush with filtered river water, not treated potable water. Low-flow fixtures are employed throughout our accommodations and spa facilities. Our closed-loop geothermal heat exchange system reduces water consumption of the pools with 80% compared to other geothermal lpools in Iceland.

Modular, pre-fabricated construction
Buildings will be designed in a modular way and constructed off-site to reduce waste and disturbance. This allows fast assembly with minimal noise, traffic, and soil impact. Removable structures mean all building can be removed easily and used elsewhere.

We use minimal concrete to minimize our carbon footprint
Compared with a typical slap foundation we use between 40-50% less concrete. Soil removal is also 50% less than a standard building method resulting in less disturbance and transport.
We will demonstrate that luxury and low-impact construction can coexist beautifully.

Waste treatment & material recovery
Advanced on-site sewage processing will exceed Iceland’s standards. Organic waste will be separated and composted. All recyclables will be collected, measured and processed through certified local partners.

Clean Mobility
We will use electric vehicles for staff and on-site shuttle transport. For staff and guests EV charging points will be available in ample quantity. Pedestrian-first layout of our resort will reduce internal road footprint.

Energy-Saving Practices
Smart systems will reduce energy use automatically during low occupancy. Think (movement-activated) LED lighting, low-energy pumps, and efficient ventilation all monitored by a comprehensive building management system.
Heat-recovery systems reuse thermal energy resulting in a 40% savings in energy needs for our geothermal pools compared with comparable Icelandic pools.

To sum it up: a wellness destination with purpose
Hugarró offers guests a chance to reconnect with nature in a way that honors the planet.
Every geothermal bath, every night in a cabin, every moment in nature is powered by renewable energy. Thanks to thoughtful design, and a commitment to future generations, Hugarró is more than a place to unwind—it’s a model for how tourism can be restorative, not extractive.
Our mission is simple: Create transformational human experiences while protecting and celebrating the land that makes them possible.
This is wellness—redefined, reimagined, and responsibly powered by Iceland itself !
